Brightly festooned in patriotic colors for Lancaster's 250th anniversary in 1903, the A.L. Safford Store and Post Office is shown here in full view on Main Street in Lancaster Center. Described in 1905 as a "happy combination of old country variety and modern department store," proprietor Safford operated the establishment for more than 20 years in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
