Full text: NOTES FROM Edward E. Vachon Piano Tuner & Piano Technician Presently Residing at 271 Auburn Street, Manchester, N.H. 03103 Born 1913 near Thetford Mines, Megantic County, Province of Quebeck, Canada. It has been recorded that Thetford Mines once produced sixty percent of the world's Asbestos. I attended school for four years in Canada in a one room school house in the back woods as we refer to it these days. That it was. All in the French Language. My parents moved to the United States in 1923 when I was ten years old. We came directly to Manchester, N.H. and I have been a resident here since. I had a fairly severe visual impairment and as a result was sent to Perkins School For The Blind in Watertown, Mass. I was a student there for eight years and graduated in 1934. I learned piano tuning while a student at Perkins. This was taught as a trade if you desired to learn this, but in addition to the regular school studies .. On your own time .. 2 I graduated from Perkins in 1934 and started tuning pianos in the fall of the same year. At that time I was 21 years old. It has been fifty seven years last October that I have been tuning pianos. Work was scarce at that time because we were in the depression of the 1930's. I went knocking on doors and ringing door bells trying to find work to stay alive. I didn't like having to do this but did it anyway. I managed to survive the first five years and after that things started to improve. In late 1935 I picked up the work of tuning the pianos at what later became to be known as the Carousel Ballroom in Manchester and tuned pianos there to the day it closed their doors. 50 years. Every bid band in the country came there, some of which were: Guy Lombardo Benny Goodman The Dorsey Brothers Vaughn Monroe Glen Miller Lester Lanin Ted Herbert Should I Mention Ted Herbert? He was once upon a time rated by "DOWN BEAT MAGAZINE" as the second best big band in the country.
