A photograph of the prize festival of 1879 in The Crystal Palace, the original location of the Royal Normal College for the Blind was in three of six not-yet-opened shops, which formed 1-6 Paxton Terrace, now 36-40 Anerley Hill. The College soon outgrew the original premises on Paxton Terrace, (chosen because it was close to the Concert Room of the Crystal Palace, shown in the photograph) which it had occupied since March 1872, and in 1873, a mortgage was obtained and W. H. Smith, acting on behalf of the Governors, signed the deeds for The Mount in Westow Street.
