Item Information
- Title:
- Matinicus
- Description:
-
An island with a large fish wharf off the coast of Maine. Very beautiful and seldom visited by artists. (Bellows) / Like Winslow Homer, Bellows was fascinated every aspect of the rocky coast of Maine. His first paintings there were done in 1910, when he accompanied Robert Henri and Henri's student Randall Davey to Monhegan land. He returned to Montclair, New Jersey, with his wife for the birth of their first child, Anne. The Bellows family summered at Monhegan in 1914. Emma and George, Leon Kroll, and another couple were taken by a local fisherman over rough waters to spend the night at the small isolated island of Matinicus. (Mason)
