Smith studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts after leaving her short career as a kindergarten teacher. She was a prolific contributor to books and magazines during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, illustrating stories and articles for Century, Collier's, Leslie's Weekly, Scribner's and Ladies' Home Journal. During her career she illustrated over 60 books, 250 periodicals, and almost 200 covers for Good Housekeeping. Smith produced only one war poste. However, she participated in a program in which artists volunteered to do portraits of patriotic citizens whose purchase of Liberty Bonds were in the thousands of dollars.
