Cousin of Harriet Hosmer and nephew of Dr. Hiram Hosmer. Dr. Alfred Hosmer was born in Newton Upper Falls in 1832. He graduated with honors from Harvard College in 1853.He entered into practice with his uncle, Dr, Hiram Hosmer, and studied in Paris. He set up an office in Watertown in 1857. He married Helen Augusta Stickney, youngest daughter of Josiah Stickney, in 1860. They had a son and a daughter. Dr. Hosmer was involved in many medical societies: Fellow of Massachusetts Society, 1846 and was youngest president in 1882 - President of the Obstetrical Society of Boston for two years - President of Middlesex South District Medical Society - Medical examiner for the Seventh district of Middlesex - Organized and was first President of Massachusetts MedicopLegal Society for three years - Fellow of American Academy od Arts and Science, 1879 - Member of the State Board of of Health, Lunacy and Charity, 1881 as chairman of the Health Committee. He was also well published in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal. Dr. Hosmer was on the School Committee from 1866 to 1871, where he was chairman from 1888 to 1869. he was member of the Board of Library Trustees 1868 to 1878 and chairman 1871 and 1873 to 1877. He was a Trustee of the Watertown Savings Bank, 1876 and President 1874 to 1890. He was a founder of the Historical Society of Watertown and was the first President. He belonged to the First Parish, Unitarian Society.
