Built a mansion in 1845 on the corner of Church and Marshall Streets. He once entertained Charles Dickens here. "Whiting had a strong personality, gruff and outspoken and not making many friends." Cofounded a bank in the Noyes Block on Main Street. He lost one son because of a fall from the window. Another son had an ostrich farm in California.
