Male employees at work in Richardson's Wool Washeries and Carbonising Works, Port Elizabeth, South Africa [graphic]
Description:
Male employees at work in Richardson's Wool Washeries and Carbonising Works, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Gelatin silver print, [1910-30]. Image depicts an interior view of Richardson's Wool Washeries and Carbonising Works in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Raw wool is piled up in the background on shelves under the ceiling, but the male employees visible appear to be standing at a table sorting feathers. Large piles of feathers can be seen on the tables on the right, and smaller batches of feathers are on the table in the foreground. Given Richardonson's location in South Africa, these are presumably ostrich feathers. 36.25 x 28.5 cm. (w/out mount); 61 x 48 cm. (w/mount). (OCLC)
There was a Richardson's Wool Washeries in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, as early as 1921. In 1944 a Richardson's Wool Washeries Ltd. was established in Port Elizabeth. Note the British spelling of carbonising in 0000.1721.9, rather than the American version (carbonizing). No trace of a Richardson's Wool Washeries could be found in the United States.
