This front page is from Lancaster's earliest edition of Mary Rowlandson's book (first published in 1682). Some scholars regard it as the first of a uniquely American literary genre, the "captivity narrative." A popular classic of days past, it has seen more than 40 editions. It is also notable as the first American full-length work authored by a woman.
