Lancaster's Old Slate Quarry, near Cumbury Pond in the northeastern section of town, was discovered by a wealthy Boston architect and contractor Gershom Flagg, who owned a farm in Lancaster. In 1752, he began quarrying slate in what is thought to be the oldest slate quarry in America. The quarry was still used in the first decade of the 19th century but was then given up because transportation was expensive and because water stood deep in the pit.
