Located on the original grant of Gamaliel Beaman, who settled in Lancaster in 1659, was the Beaman Oak, a large red oak tree (Quercus rubra). Once the largest of its kind in Massachusetts, the circumference of the tree at its base was 31 feet and, at 5 feet above the ground, 19 feet. The height was 73 feet and the branch spread was 75 feet. The tree, along present-day Route 117, had to be removed in 1989 because its rotting parts created a danger to those in the surrounding area.
