Nathaniel Thayer II
Item Information
- Title:
- Nathaniel Thayer II
- Description:
-
Nathaniel Thayer II (1808-1883) received his early education at the Lancaster Academy but then opted for a business career rather than attending Harvard. According to family legend, he and his elder brother John Eliot "walked to Boston and made a fortune." Both gained valuable experience in Boston's financial district and, in 1839, became partners in the firm of John E. Thayer and Brother, catering to an elite clientele. The banking house they established invested heavily in the expanding railroad industry. After the elder Thayer died in 1857, the firm was reorganized as Kidder, Peabody and Company in 1865. Rather than retire, Nathaniel Thayer II continued to invest his personal fortune not only in railroads but also in land companies, textile firms, and mines. Although he lived in Boston, he and his sons always maintained close ties to Lancaster. His family's legacy to the town is well known.
