Letter from Elizabeth Cady Stanton, New York, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1864 April 22
Description:
Elizabeth Cady Stanton writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking him to "help break in pieces this matron's 'Golden Calf' Abraham Lincoln", as she challenges a woman's claim that Garrison supports Lincoln for reelection as well. Stanton asks, "Can this nation survive another four years under such a dynasty. Is the two term principle in harmony with the genius of our institutions?" She further criticizes Lincoln's "maneuvering for releection" in wartime and declares "let us change the despot". Stanton recommends Garrison "put the name of [John C.] Fremont at the head of your Liberator" and insists that Garrison "must still be a leader of public sentiment". After signing the letter, Stanton requests that Garrison "give us a ten minute speech" in a note above the circular for the "Anniversary of the Women's Loyal National League" and on the verso, she states that "Wendell Phillips Garrison made a good speech ... he is getting ahead of his Father."
