Letter from Bourne Spooner, Plym[outh, Massachusetts], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1864 Aug[ust] 3
Description:
Bourne Spooner writes to William Lloyd Garrison about an article in the last issue of the Liberator and Garrison's reply to it. Spooner says he was "glad of an occasion that moved you to a defining of your present position" regarding his support for President Lincoln. He offers further support for Garrison's argument, suggesting that the "proslavery features of the Constitution had, by the Rebellion, become forfeited to freedom, and that President Lincoln, by exercising this new prerogative in an avowed purpose to annihilate the slave system in our land" deserved the support of all abolitionists.
