Letter from Charles Sumner, Boston, [Massachusetts], to William Lloyd Garrison, [18]63 Nov[ember] 24th
Description:
Charles Sumner writes to William Lloyd Garrison sending him a "sketch of a letter with interrogatives on the operation of Slave Emancipation in the British West Indies [that] was proposed in 1847". Sumner writes that Garrison "will recognize in it the hand-writing of our estimable friend the late Ellis Gray Loring" and he describes how Loring visited John Quincy Adams "at Quincy to seek his co-operation". Sumner says the letter should be of interest to see how emancipation "was analyzed at a time when it was little more than a hope", as well as by "all who remember Mr. Loring".
