Letter from Hiram Wilson, Toronto, [Ontario], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1839 Aug[ust] 19
Description:
Hiram Wilson writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding the safe arrival of Sister Eliza Ann Seecomb and Brother Raymond. He writes about their plans to do Missionary work in the Lake Sincar area. He writes, "The colored people in that quarter have never had a school established among them & the whites are deplorably destitute. We hope to have a school established in which the white & colored youth & children may mingle on equal terms though most of the scholars will doubtley be colored." He also writes that fugitives from the South are coming up and "entering Canada this season more numerously than ever before. May God in many Speed the time when there will be no necessity for them to flee their country & kindred for their freedom but while they do come we are bound to furnish them with the best of instruction & ought to rejoice in the privilege of doing so."
