Item Information
- Title:
- Letter from Mary Anne Estlin, Bristol, [England], to Mr. Pearsall, 1852 February 23
- Description:
-
Mary Anne Estlin writes to Mr. Pearsall regarding Mrs. Tribe's request to send extracts from a letter from Mrs. M.W. Chapman in reference to an attack recently made on the abolitionists in the "B.Banner" and the "authentic reports of the A.S. Meeting & speeches as New York in 1850, in order to show you how little reliance can be placed on the authorities quoted by Dr. Campbell." He writes that the "Liberator" includes this information. Mrs. Tribe also wanted her to include the "Reply of Wm. Garrison to the Editor of the Moral Advertiser, who had bought forward the often repeated charge against him of intruding peculiar theological opinions into the Antislavery agitations." She writes that Mrs. Pearsall was disturbed by an article in the British Banner and feated that the (Bristol) antislavery society would compromise its principles by "co-operating with the through going American Abolitionists, & this I presume was the reason of Mrs. Tribe's wishing the proofs to the contrary to be placed before you." She writes that those who have watched the antislavery movement and raise the cry of "infidelity" against the abolitionists are diverting attention from the fact that "professing Christians are leaving it to those whom they term 'infidels' to do their work." She writes that until the Churches of America have changed their course, & the Churches of England have ceased to sanction them in their inaction, the same grievances will continue to occur. The Bristol society finds Reverend Ed. Mathews a "valuable auxiliary" because he has abundant information on the connection of different religious bodies in America with slaveholding.
