- Letter from S. Alfred Steinthal, Bridgewater, [England], to Mary Anne Estlin, 1854 Nov[ember] 24
- Description:
-
S. Alfred Steinthal writes to Mary Anne Estlin in regards to an "anti-slavery skirmish" that occured at a meeting on the topic of persecutions which "Protestants have to endure for consciousness sake in Catholic..and even Protestant countries." He discusses what happened at the meeting. He writes that Dr. Blackwood gave a "fair and interesting" statement of European news. The statement included news from a meeting held in New York. He made his own statement at the meeting, including news that Mrs. Douglass has "been imprisoned in Virginia for teaching some colored persons to read the Bible and as the New York clergy had so empathetically protested against all persecution I proposed that the resolution should not alone ask the Germans etc. to amend their ways but should also call upon the American Protestant Church to be consistent."
