Letter from Philo C. Pettibone, Andover, [Massachusetts], to Maria Weston Chapman, 1839 Aug[ust] 23
Description:
Philo C. Pettibone writes to Maria Weston Chapman in regards to approving of Maria's suggestion that the abolitionists pass a resolution expressing sympathy with the movement of English abolitionists to abolish East India oppression. He has no sympathy for Charles T. Torrey "however much I may look upon him as an object of pity." He is glad that only an abstract of Torrey's letter was published in the Liberator. He encloses a statement in the letter from the Reverend Daniel H. Babcock (an Orthodox clergyman) "whose testimony you will so grow to substantiate the proof that Mr. Torrey wrote one such a letter as the certificate states."
Holograph, signed.
Title devised by cataloger.
Handwriting in another pen indicates this is by a P.C. "Rettibone," but the author is actually Philo C. Pettibone.
