Letter from Sophia Davenport, Philadelphia, [Pennsylvania], to Anne Warren Weston, 1836 May 28
Description:
Sophia Davenport writes to Anne Warren Weston in regards to thanking her for her gift of a publication. She wishes to subscribe to the Liberator, and asks Anne to purchase for her George Thompson's lectures and debates in England. She would like to join the anti-slavery society also. She asks if Anne has heard of the "shocking and barbarous" act that took place in St. Louis. She will send Elijah Lovejoy's account of it and wishes to become better acquainted with him. She describes news of an abolition disturbance at Marion College where one of the students was accused of distributing "incendiary publications" was seized and threatened of being tarred and feathered or lynched but "after due consideration, they concluded on account of his youth to pardon him." Subsequently, at a public meeting, he "arose with an Abolition book in one hand and a drawn knife in the other and began to read, one of the gentlemen present went to him to stop him and the young man instantly stabbed him so that he died in a short time. The young man was seized and lodged in jail then to await his trial." She is unsure to what length this story is true but she is certain that the gentleman who was stabbed is dead. Mr. Elliot will ascertain the facts.
