Letter from Asa Cutler, Quinebaug, [Connecticut], to Samuel May, 1852 August 8th
Description:
Asa Cutler writes to Samuel May stating that the village of Wilkinson is now called Quinebaug and that he should direct all letters to Quinebaug. Cutler also accepts May's proposals for a meeting in the town but asks him to "send some one instead of S.S. Foster." He says, "Stephen you know is quite ultra ...such a man as Stephen is rather too strong for the kind of folks" in Quinebaug, and he suggests May send Abby Kelley Foster, Lucy Stone, or C.C. Burleigh instead. Cutler says the town "is a very hard place and it needs strong men and women too to overcome the old Theological dogmas ..." He describes how people "are opposed to the further extention [sic] of slavery ... but say nothing about slavery in the states." While William Lloyd Garrison and Lucy Stone "did a good work here," more remains to be done. Cutler offers "to help the cause of humanity forward, whether it be mens rights or womens rights" and he asks May who will come to the meeting so he can "give out the notice" in time. In the postscript, Cutler reminds May "to superscribe all papers & letters that have been heretofore been Directed to Wilkinson now direct them Quinebaug."
