Letter from John Humphrey Noyes, Ithaca, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1838 May 16
Description:
In this letter titled, "The Witness ... Secret History of Perfectionism, No. 3.," John Humphrey Noyes outlines the "history of the birth of New Haven Perfectionism [which] may be found in Boyles letter to Finney in the 7th No. Vol. 1 of the Perfectionist." He claims that "New Haven Perfectionism is distinguished from all others" and that he "and Abigail Merwin were its first witnesses." Noyes also states that the partnership between himself and James Boyle "is now publicly dissolved by his letter in the Ishmaelite." After his signature, a note states that the letter "was received from the author with a request that it should be copied and sent to several addresses - among them was 'the Liberator.'"
