Normally a first baseman, slugger Jimmie Foxx caught just 1 game (actually just 1 inning) in 1937 for the Red Sox. In 1940, he caught a total of 42 games for the Red Sox (including 7 at home vs. the Yankees). This shot is almost certainly from the 1937 game. On Wed. Aug. 11, 1937, in the first game of a doubleheader vs. the New York Yankees, Foxx began the game at first base. In the 14th inning, after several Red Sox players had been ejected, Foxx was forced to change positions and got behind the plate with 2 outs in the 14th inning. Yankee Joe DiMaggio batted and reached base on an error by Red Sox shortstop Joe Cronin before Yankee Lou Gehrig flied out to end the inning with Yankees leading 8-4. If this is the 1937 game, the home plate umpire pictured is Lou Kolls (Society for American Baseball Research, 2014-2015).
