Origin: Written in northern France in the third quarter of the 14th century, for the use of a female patron (see portait in the margin of fol. 9). For the use of Metz. The calendar includes numerous Metz feasts in blue or gold: Felice (21 Feb., in blue), the Translation of Clement (2 May, in blue), Arnulphus (16 August, in blue), Terentius (29 October, in blue), and Clement, Bishop of Metz (23 November, in gold). The Hours of the Virgin and Office of the Dead are also Metz use. Fol. 1-8 were added in the early fifteenth century. 19th- and early 20th-century pencil notes inside front cover.

Script: Written in a gothic bookhand, rubrics in gold leaf.
Decoration (primary): Ten half-page miniatures with gilt full-bar borders of colored vines and leaves, with three-line initials in gold and colors, some bas-de-page or marginal illustrations and drolleries, gold scroll or diapered backgrounds in gold and colors, these miniatures original to the manuscript: Virgin and child (fol. 9, Matins, Hours of the Virgin) -- The Betrayal (fol. 21, Lauds, Hours of the Virgin) -- Christ before Pilate (fol. 34, Prime, Hours of the Virgin) -- The Flagellation (fol. 40, Terce, Hours of the Virgin) -- The Road to Calvary (fol. 44v, Sext, Hours of the Virgin) -- The Crucifixion (fol. 84v, Nones, Hours of the Virgin) -- Pièta (fol. 52v, Vespers, Hours of the Virgin) -- The Burial (fol. 60v, Compline, Hours of the Virgin) -- Christ in Majesty (fol. 66, Penitential Psalms).
Decoration (secondary): Four full-page miniatures with vines and gold leaves at corners and in margins, diapered backgrounds in colors, added with fol. 13-18 in the early 15th century: The Annunciation (fol. 1v) -- The Trinity (fol. 2v) -- The Crucifixion (fol. 4v) -- St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist (fol. 6v). One-line initials throughout in gold on colors; two-line initials throughout in colors on gold with foliate bar borders in gold and colors into margins, 28 of them historiated with portraits of saints, layfolk, queens and nuns.
Binding: Bound in 1854 in blind-stamped dark-green calf over boards, spine gilt in compartments, metal clasps with tortoise-shell inlays, gilt filigree turn-ins, marbled paper pastedowns and conjoint flyleaves, all edges gilt, blue ribbon bookmark, by Duru (signed "Duru 1854" on fol. i verso), gilt fillet board edges.
