Text from item: Built prior to 1750 by Dr. George Griggs, son of one of the earliest settlers of the town (Muddy River). The location was the court end of the town. The building was called the Tontine and sometimes the "long house." Dr. Downer came into possession of the property through marriage. He was a skillful surgeon during the Revolution.
