A fair amount of this letter has been crossed out, presumably by May, who appears to have sent this letter to a newspaper for publication of some of its pages.
At the top of the letter, May's handwriting reads, "extract of a letter from Rev. S. A. Steinthal to Samuel May Jr., Corresponding Secretary of the Massachusetts Antislavery Society." An additional note reads, "Please return this when copy is done with, to Samuel May, Jr., Leicester, MA., by mail."
Holograph, signed.
May's handwriting on the envelope reads, "Rec'd Sept. 1st."
