Webb defends his article on Gerrit Smith and comments on the book by Frederick Douglass, "My Bondage and My Freedom." He tells May that he read in "The New York Herald" that Joseph Barker had died. He discusses Barker and Stephen S. Foster, and the health of Francis Jackson.
