May's writing on the envelope reads, "Originally sent to A. M. Powell, Aug. 26, 1867 (the day of S. J. M.'s [Samuel Joseph May's] coming to see me). Powell declined to insert it (see his letter), and referred it to W. Phillips. Phillips refused to insert it (see St[andard] of Sept. 7). This Mss. came back to me, Sept. 6, 1867."
The envelope is from the stationery of the "National Anti-Slavery Standard." It reads, "vol. XXVII. Published every Saturday. Aaron M. Powell, Editor. Wendell Phillips, Special Editorial Contributor. 39 Nassau Street, New York."
