Item Information
Title:
Group [A.O.C.?] portrait on Meekins Library steps, 1900
Description:
This photograph shows a group of 35 young men and women, most of them appearing to be teenagers while one man and two women seem to be adults, posed on the front steps of the three-year-old Meekins Library in Williamsburg, Massachusetts. A contemporary handwritten label affixed to the back of the board reads, 'Taken Dec. 1900, for Xmas present from A.O.C.' Underlying that note and partially covered by it is another notation in a different hand, printed on the mat in white ink. The visible portion reads, 'Meekins Library steps/ Williamsburg, Mass/ 34 inches. These notations shed no light on who the individuals were, what the group was, or the nature of the occasion. Whether A.O.C. was a person or an organization is also unknown. [Another copy of this image in the collection of the Williamsburg Historical Society has a note on it indicating that the second girl from the right in the second row is Estella Damon (1887-1972).] Anyone who has any of this information is asked to contact Daria D'Arienzo at the email address below. The photograph is 4.6 x 6.5 inches and is mounted on a stiff board measuring 8 x 10 inches.
