Boston Gazette, No. 47 of Vol. 4, printed in Boston Massachusetts on Thursday, June 1, 1815. Article on page 2, column 2, lauds the superior seamanship and skill of USS Constitution's crew during the battle with British frigates HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, and describes the action of sailor Tobias Farnell: "a man by the name of Tobias Farnell had his arm shattered by a ball; after the surgeon had amputated it...and before the dressing was completed, the cheers were heard for the surrender of the Cyane, the brave fellow twitched the bleeding stump from the surgeon and waved it, joining in the cheers! He is since dead."
