Letter from Amos Augustus Phelps, Boston, to James Gillespie Birney and Joshua Leavitt, Feb 4. 1840
Description:
Amos A. Phelps urges James Gillespie Birney to come to Boston to represent the New Organization ([the Massachusetts Abolition Society]) at a legislation hearing. He suggests that, if Birney cannot come, he should send [Henry] Stanton or Joshua Leavitt. Phelps says Leavitt can “take up in his cool, statistical, lawyer-like way, the subject of the foreign slave trade... ” He stresses the importance of a skillful presentation of the New Organization’s arguments in favor of ending the foreign slave trade.
