The departure of Columbus from Palos at dawn on September 4, 1492. The fleet was one of three ships; the nearest in the etching is the caravel, Santa Maria, in which Columbus himself sailed. A full-size replica of the Santa Maria is used for celebrations at Palos, and was sketched by the artist in 1932 at Huelva, which is on the opposite side of the river from Palos.

Additional information accompanying item: Many vertical scratches appear in the sky and there are indications of charcoal traces through the middle of plate where other scratches have been eliminated. Tone has been left in the water, indicating a value that will later be etched in.
