The Great Colonial Hurricane, August 26, 1635. The storm supported the greatest winds and surge of any hurricane in New England history and was perfectly positioned to inflict maximum impact on Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay, and the southeast coast. Modeled time courses for storm tides for the heads of Buzzards, Narragansett (Providence, Rhode Island), and Boston Bays. The rapidity with which the tide rose and fell matches Governor William Bradford’s description.
