Additional information on item verso: In 1866, an order was introduced in the city council to erect a memorial monument on Flag Staff Hill on the Common to the memory of the soldiers of Boston who fell in the war of the rebellion. The order originally contemplated an expenditure of 100,000 dollars. It was contemplated to have the corner stone [illegible] 1867 and, before the government of 1866 went out, ground was broken and the foundation laid when it was found the cast would be 160,000 dollars. This caused dissatisfaction and an order [illegible] to stop the work and the erection stopped. Subsequently the foundation was covered up and the sod replaced and perhaps may excite the curiosity of future generation. The foundation cost 12,546 dollars. 1867.
