Caption: Peaceful march - Civil rights demonstrators completed with serious incident their march in Springfield yesterday to protect alleged police brutality. A group gathered above, on the City Hall steps to sign civil rights songs, The march, right, was watched closely by National Guardsmen carrying rifles with fixed bayonets. The marchers completed their two-mile trek, and after several speeches returned to the assembly point and dispersed. Helmeted State and local police backed up the Guardsmen.
