Description:
Josephine Butler writes to unknown sending a copy of a letter (not included) sent to "persons in America we have had appeals for suggestions with regard to the opposition ... towards the legalizing of prostitution." Butler claims the "International Medical Congresses ... will not be satisfied until the Anglo Saxon race takes the lead in the adoption of this system of modern, white slavery" and invites the recipient to respond to the subject of the legalization of prostitution.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on stationery belonging to the "British and Continental Federation for the abolition of Government regulation of prostitution." The full letterhead reads, "British and Continental Federation for the abolition of Government regulation of prostitution. 27 Great George Street, Westminster, London and 348 Park Road, Liverpool." In the letterhead, the address "27 Great George Street, Westminster, London" has been struck through with a single line. Below the salutation, the number "8" is written in pencil.
