Letter from Nathaniel Peabody Rogers, [Concord, New Hampshire], to William Lloyd Garrison, [1844 January or February]
Description:
Nathaniel Peabody Rogers writes to William Lloyd Garrison declaring he does "not denounce denounce physical force as sinful, but merely an unwarrantable antislavery instrumentality." Rogers states that he "should have sent this to the National Standard" but asks Garrison to "Please give it place in the Liberator." In closing the letter, Rogers asserts, "I do not intend as the doctrine of the Old Society, but my own."

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. The letter is incomplete and begins mid-sentence on the final page of the letter. In the head- spine corner, there is a small checkmark and the number "6" both written in pencil. Along the head edge the words "Jan or Feb 1844" are also written in pencil. Below the signtaure, there is a purple circular stamp enclosing the words, "Garrison MSS." Along the spine edge, towards the bottom of the page, "V14, P6" is recorded in pencil vertically, facing the fore edge. On the verso, along the tail edge and upside-down, there is wood-engraved image of a chained slave on one knee under the words, "Am I Not A Man And A Brother?"
