Description:
Elizabeth Oakes Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison expressing her regret that "it was not in my power to see more of you while in Boston". She promises that when stronger she will "be able to speak out boldly in favor of your religious work." Smith also sends Garrison her "circular" (printed on page 3), stating they wish to have "fifteen hundred subscribers before we start" publication, and asks for Garrison's help. Before ending the letter, Smith provides her travel plans and asks Garrison to pass a letter to Lucretia Mott.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with a faint, embossed rectangular logo in the head- spine corner. Also in the head- spine corner is a checkmark above the number "43," both drawn in pencil. Along the head edge, the number "1852" is written above "June 17," also in pencil (note that "June" is erroneous, as the author dates the letter "Jan. 17" on page 2). The third page is a printed "Prospectus" for "The Egeria."
