Letter from Elias Smith, New Orleans, L[ouisian]a, to William Lloyd Garrison, 1879 April 9
Description:
Elias Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison describing "the exodus of the northern parishes of this state [Lousiana] and Mississippi [that] has taken on immense proportions!" Smith refers to those leaving as "modern Egyptians fleeing to their Western Canaan" and mentions a deptuation sent to "Washington seeking some measure to stop the stampede!" He also tells Garrison about a convention "of the most influential among colored men of La. ministers, teachers &c." that has been called to address the same issue and recommends that Garrison, "the old Pioneer of freedom", send a letter to the convention. Smith assures him that his words "would have a very good effect."
