Description:
Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison stating that when he picked up the Liberator this morning he remembered that "it is a long time since I have paid any thing on my subscription" and so encloses $10 (not included) with the letter. He also tells Garrison, "Well, I am to go to Congress!" (Smith had just been elected as a representative from New York to the 33rd Congress), and shares his plan to move to Washington and his need to find a place to live.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white, lined paper. In the head- spine corner, there is a checkmark drawn in pencil, while next to the salutation the number "2" is written in pencil. On the verso, another handwriting (from Smith's) has written "Gerrit Smith Peterboro' N.Y. 5 Jany 1853 $10".
