Letter from Gerrit Smith, Peterboro, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1853 June 28th
Description:
Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison, thanking him "in another's hand for an old number of the Liberator." He tells Garrison that he has been "confined to my bed for nearly a week by a severe surgical operation" and referencing a previous letter in which he asked Garrison about a quote from the Marquis de Lafayette, Smith states, "I was sure that Lafayette had spoken so - but I could not lay my hand on the proof." In the postscript, Smith offers to return the number of the Liberator that Garrison has sent him, asking that if Garrison would like it back, "please say so".
