In this letter to William Lloyd Garrison, Gerrit Smith expresses his pleasure in seeing his "brief Argument on the Constitutional Question in the matter of soldier voting" in the Liberator. He thanks Garrison for correcting a grammatical error he had made before declaring, "What an abominable thing from Dr. [Nathan] Lord's pen in your Refuge of Oppression column!"
