Description:
Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison acknowledging a letter he received from Garrison and saying he does not plan to go to Washington unless his wife, Mrs. Smith, does but "she seems hardly well enough to go." Smith tells Garrison he received letters from both Mr. [Salmon P.] Chase and his daughter [Elizabeth Smith Miller] of "the pleasant day you all had at Readsville." He then declares, "I love Chase" and shares his opinion of Chase's work.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white, lined paper with an embossed logo in the head- spine corner containing the words, "Carsons Congress". Under the third line of the second paragraph, "(Secy. S.P.)" has been inserted in pencil before the word "Chase".
