Letter from Gerrit Smith, Peterboro, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, [18]63 July 13.
Description:
In this letter to William Lloyd Garrison, Gerrit Smith writes about Conrad Wiegand, saying he has "for years corresponded with him - & now he has afforded me the pleasure of being personally acquainted with him." Smith passes along Wiegand's wish "to take you & Mr. Phillips by the hand before his return to California" and states he believes Garrison "will be much interested in him." Smith also comments on a letter Garrison sent to the Tribune about the conduct of M.D. Conway, calling the letter "timely & conclusive." After the letter from Gerrit Smith ends, another, undated, letter begins addressed to "My dear friend". This letter introduces Conrad Wiegand, saying Wiegand "is attracted to you by a grievous and hearty sympathy". It then states, "We have been having happy days here with Hon. Gerrit Smith" and is signed, "L.A. Sawyer".
Holograph, signed.
