Description:
Rebecca Spring writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking for his help to "prepare an account of my father's [Arnold Buffum] life in a little book to be printed but not published". Spring writes that "The memory of the early Anti-Slavery people is beyond all price. Some record should be kept to show the people to come, when this shall be truly a Free Nation, what freedom has cost." She also mentions the appointment of Salmon P. Chase as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, calling it "almost as important as Lincoln's reelection." In the postscript, Spring tells Garrison that she is "glad the Liberator and Standard are to be united."

In the head- spine corner of the first page, "Spring" is written in pencil, while under the signature on the third page, "(Daughter of Arnold Buffum)" has been written in a different handwriting and a different shade of black ink.
