Description:
David Lee Child writes to an unknown person about "obtaining some information & advice". Child explains that his nephew, William Garrison Haskins, has not only lost a brother in the Civil War but had himself served for the duration of the war, being promoted to a 2nd Lieutenant in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers. William Garrison Haskins "is 25 years old & has a wife & child. His aim is to obtain a situation where he would get some remuneration & at the same acquire such knowledge & skill" to allow him to use "a small capital with safety & success." Child asks the recipient for "information of the state & prospects of your branch of trade ... [and] the best course for him to pursue for the accomplishment of his wishes."

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white lined, paper. In the head- spine corner, "To ?" is written in a different shade of black ink next to the date, "8/23/66". Below the salutation, the number "61" is written in pencil.
