Smith comments on the article and its subject, Bishop John Henry Hopkins, before discussing an editorial about Garrison in the same number of the Independent. Smith also lists his voting record and shares some news of their mutual friends, including the death of James Mott.

Under the image, the number "7" is written in pencil, while under the date, in the head- fore corner of the first page, the number "1868." is also written in pencil.
