Letter from Gerrit Smith, Peterboro, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, [18]74 Sept[ember] 20
Description:
Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison telling him that "you tax yourself with writing such thoughtful letters ... & with preparing for the press such admirable articles". He thanks Garrison for sending him copies of his work, "The new reign of terror" and states that "No one can write on oppression as you can. You seem to be a born-hater of it." Smith then discusses national politics and shares his fear "that our nation is to be destroyed by this infernal Democratic Party." He also mentions Wendell Phillips and remarks that the "cowardice of the Republic Party is to be lamented about as much as the depravity of the Democratic Party" before discussing the Civil Rights Bill.
