Jesse Wheaton writes to Amos A. Phelps declining his offer of being one of the Vice Presidents of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. He writes, "it is not probable I shall be able to attend another anniversary of any Anti Slavery Society, but I highly approve of the steps your Society has taken and the measures you are pursuing, and shall do everything in my power to Serve the cause as a private member, being fully convinced that faithfull attention...is the only sure course Abolitionists can take to affect the emancipation of the oppressed in our land."
