Description:
In this fragment of a letter to unknown, James Miller M'Kim first mentions the article "Great Auction sale of slaves (by Pierce Butler)" and then says that the "canvass has been conducted to the most thorough anti-slavery principles". After the signature, there is a postscript on verso, where M'Kim says he is sending "an electioneering placard" that "will show that the politicians here, as well as with you, have stolen our peculiar thunder." He also discusses John Brodhead, the president of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad.

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. The first pages of the letter seem to be missing and the first page here begins with the writing climbing vertically, facing the right side of the page. In the head- spine corner "J.M. McKim Phila. Pa Oct. 1863" is written in a different handwriting and a different shade of black ink above the number "96" written in pencil.
